Out with the grinder...

It's texture time again! This week, although output has been rather low, I've been working on a couple of new platters for the show at Parham House in July. I'll need to go into production mode this weekend though to make sure I've got enough work to display. The Proxxon long-neck grinder has been out of its box and I've used it for a couple of different texturing effects. I know some people prefer the smooth, sanded, machined surface of a platter rim...but some prefer a bit of texture too, as I found out at my Open House in May. So I was determined to make sure I had some textured pieces to offer. One of the platters has been finished, though I haven't quite decided its name yet - it's currently called Hot Red Etched Rim.......hmmmm, does sound a bit like a painful medical condition.

The second of this week's textured platters is still on the lathe, having been given its first coat of gloss lacquer.  The middle is yet to be turned out, which will be tomorrow's first job before I get manic and try to complete at least 6 bowls and platters - I have got most of the preparation of the backs done apart from a bit of sanding so it should be possible. This is what it looks like at the moment.

There will be videos of both techniques coming up so keep an eye on my Videos page or my Youtube channel.

I'll post my progress on Sunday if I've got any strength left!

Cheers

What inspired you to start experimenting with new texturing effects for your platters?

It was down to watching Mick Hanbury demonstrate in 2014 and seeing what wonderful effects he could produce with a Proxxon...and then when my woodturning club bought one in 2017 for the club tool bank, I gave it a try....and haven't looked back!
