Woodturning Demonstrations

Are you looking for a demonstrator for your woodturning club or event?

Want to brighten up a club night with whirling blanks covered with paint or stain or texture, or even all three at once?

Do your members want to see some decorative techniques  they can easily do in their workshop that don't need any special equipment?

Individuals and small groups 

I offer several types of courses and lessons for individuals.

  • Full-day one-to -one sessions - these take place in my workshop in Sussex .
  • Small group workshops - up to four turners for a two-day course covering a wide range of colouring and texturing techniques. These courses take place at Hope Woodturning in Essex.
  • Half-day beginner sessions for new turners who want to have some tuition about tool use and safe practices at the lathe.
  • Free online workshops for my newsletter subscribers, roughly once a month throughout the year.

Clubs and organisations

I offer a full range of services for clubs and woodturning organisations.

  • Club night demonstrations - either in person or online from my workshop
  • Full day demonstrations at your club
  • Masterclasses for up to four club members at a time at your own workshop
  • Demonstrations for national and international events - I've demonstrated at UKIWS and Chestnut Products Woodturning Weekenders, and at seminars in Ireland, Spain and Greece, as well as online for the AAW and as part of an international group of turners including Emma Cook, Rebecca De Groot, Chris Parker, Jeff Hornung, Kade Bolger, Tod Raines and Joanna Sauvageau.

Spinning paint

Layers of acrylic paint applied while the bowl is spinning on the lathe, framed with a black inner and outer edge

Textured and coloured

Surface textured with rotary tool and burr and coloured with spirit stains applied by airbrush

Paint dabbing

Shades of blue with yellow highlights applied over ebonising lacquer to create a decorative rim

Textured and coloured spiral rim

​Some simple texturing, a bit of ebonising lacquer, some sanding back and then spirit stain dabbed over the surface. A lacquer finish protects the rim, and wax protects the uncoloured wood.
